A paramotor pilot ground handling a blue wing on a grass airfield

Online paramotor ground school

Learn to fly,
before you fly

Northern Skies Academy is opening soon: video ground school built around the BHPA paramotor syllabus. Whether you are curious, already training, or a qualified pilot keeping current, you can work through it alongside or before your hands-on training. Join the list for early access and first word on launch pricing.

What you get

Ground school, done properly

Short, focused videos

Every lesson is 3–10 minutes. No fluff, just what you need to know.

20+ hours of content

The full paramotor syllabus end to end, from your first wing inspection to confident cross-country flying.

Quizzes that stick

Check your understanding at the end of every module and watch your progress build.

Ask under every lesson

Discussion on each lesson means your questions get answered in context, by an instructor.

Who it's for

Wherever you're up to

The Academy is for complete beginners, active students, qualified pilots, and anyone coming back to the material.

Completely new and curious

Never flown and not signed up anywhere yet. Learn what's involved, what the kit does, and how weather works before you commit to a school.

Waiting for a training slot

Slots and weather windows are scarce. Use the wait to get the theory sorted so your first days at the field are spent flying, not reading.

Mid-course

Arrive already knowing the airspace, the weather and the checks, and turn up to each session ready to work on the flying itself.

Qualified and topping up

Come back to the parts you rarely use — emergencies, navigation, airspace changes — and keep your theory current.

Qualified and keeping current

Use the full syllabus as a structured refresher. Revisit the material before a new season, after a break, or whenever you want your confidence back.

Learned elsewhere

Trained abroad or with another school and want your knowledge aligned with the UK BHPA syllabus, rules and airspace.

The Academy is ground school, designed to run alongside real-world training with a qualified instructor. It never replaces it. You learn to fly in the air, with an instructor, at a proper site.

Questions

Before you join

When does the Academy open?

The launch date is being finalised. The waiting list hears first, and early access goes out before anything is announced publicly.

What does membership cost?

Pricing is still being worked out. I want it to be fair for someone still saving up for their training, and the waiting list will get first word on it, including any early-access rate.

Does this replace flight training?

No. You cannot learn to fly from videos, and nothing here pretends otherwise. This is ground school to run alongside or before hands-on training with a qualified instructor at a real site.

I'm not signed up to a course. Can I still join?

Yes. The Academy starts from the beginning. You can work through the theory while you decide on a school, save for training, or wait for a slot. You will still need hands-on instruction to qualify.

I trained years ago. Is this useful for me?

Yes. The modules work as a refresher for qualified pilots who want to keep their theory current, revisit emergencies and airspace, or prepare for a new season.

Do I need any aviation background?

None at all. The material starts from the beginning and assumes no previous flying or weather knowledge. If you already have a background, you can skip ahead.

Is the content UK-specific?

Only the air law and airspace sections are UK-specific. The full courses focus on the practical side — weather, equipment, ground handling, launch and landing technique, emergency procedures and cross-country skills — which apply to paramotor pilots everywhere. Pilots outside the UK can use almost all of the material and simply check their own national rules where the law differs.

What happens when I join the waiting list?

Your name and email are kept so I can email you about the launch. You will get early access before general membership opens, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
